| Big Five Head Start Program |

| The Head Start Program is funded for 807, three and four years olds but actually serves approximately 940 each year. Comprehensive health, educational, and developmental services are provided to in accordance with the Federal Performance Standards and the State Licensing requirements. |

| The program operates 49 classrooms at 29 site locations in the counties of Bryan, Carter, Coal, Love, and Pontotoc. Most of the classes are in partnerships with the public schools in the Big Five service area and five classes are operated at a area Day Care Centers. |

| The administration of the program aims for planning and management to provide effective delivery of quality services at reasonable costs. The funds received provide staff salaries, help provide food and food services for each child which meets the daily nutritional requirement according to USDA guidelines, provides transportation daily to the centers, and 'des needed medical and dental services. These funds are also used to purchase and provide supplies and equipment for the centers to meet DHS Licensing requirements. |

| In 1975, PL 94-142 made provisions to include 10% handicapped children in the overall enrollment of the program. |
