Big Five’s Family Caregiver Support Program identifies and assists persons caring for a family member or friend in their home. The program operates in Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Coal, Garvin, Johnston, Love Marshall, Murray, and Pontotoc counties. Funding is by the Older Americans Act, and the criteria for assistance is that the person receiving the care must be 62 or older and must require at least two daily living supports.
When a caregiver contacts or is referred to Big Five, a home visit is scheduled to determine what supports and assistance the caregiver is receiving, and what additional supports and services they may be eligible for. Caregiver families desiring respite services are referred to the statewide OASIS Program, which will issue a voucher the caregiver can use to acquire respite and related services. Big Five can issue an emergency voucher if staff determines the situation warrants it.
Big Five maintains a 1-800 information dissemination line. The number is 1-888-439-5331. The availability of the program and the toll free number is the theme of a program brochure widely disseminated in the 10-county area. Persons calling the number receive specific answers to their inquiries regarding the availability of services, as well as specific advice on how to access those services.
Big Five organizes Caregiver Support Group meetings at convenient locations in all ten counties. Training is available to caregivers, provided by private, professional organizations and includes such skills as: physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and, skilled nursing services.
