Helping people with developmental disabilities
Whether it is learning to get dressed, put coins in a vending machine or call for a bus to get to the doctor's office, basic living skills are not always easy. Big Five teaches adaptive skills that encourage the development of self-determination and independence for people with developmental disabilities. Independence comes with learning to make choices. As advocates and friends Big Five Community Services shares real life experiences with people who have disabilities. Big Five helps identify needs and find solutions for becoming an interactive family and community member.
Big Five does more than observe and make recommendations. We believe in total involvement with the individual and their families. For instance staff members may take individuals to the grocery store, teach them how to make food choices and how to pay for their goods or may show them how to stand in line for a movie or buy popcorn. A team of professionals including case workers, speech therapists, psychologists, physical therapists, skilled nurses, occupational therapists and educators are available to determine the individual's needs and teach basic skills. Big Five helps the consumer in meeting day to day needs.
Comprehensive Services
Big Five offers assistance to individuals from 3 years old age to adult in 36 counties of Southern and Central Oklahoma. Cases are referred through and qualified by the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. After evaluation, team and family members discuss goals and a custom plan is developed for the consumer. Staff workers assist the consumer in the home, in the community and on the job site.
