Big Five's employment program is the Workforce Investment Act effort which is operated in a 10 county area of southern Oklahoma: Atoka, Bryan, Carter, Coal, Garvin, Johnston, Love, Marshall, Murray and Pontotoc. WIA helps put people to work. Families survive and thrive as they become self sufficient and stable. Regular paychecks that will do more than just meet day-to-day bills are important to a family's ability to cope. A secure, good paying job is hard to find without the skills an employer needs. The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) provides practical training for real people. Poor paying jobs result in families on assistance. Big Five is committed to helping the disadvantaged within our community become more employable. With a job, the future has hope.
LEARN BASIC JOB SKILLS OR RETRAIN FOR A NEW JOB
When you are working you are helping yourself and your family become independent. Big Five works with area employers to understand their specific workforce needs. Whether it is dislocated workers due to plant closings and layoffs or workers new to the workforce, there are opportunities within the community to get the training needed to secure a better job. It may be an opening at the local hospital, area manufacturing plant, insurance office or retail outlet; Big Five has a training opportunity to fit most worker's needs. The Workforce Development programs offer On-the-Job training (OJT), Work Experience (WE) or Classroom Training (CRT).
OJT is training while you work. This program may reimburse the employer up to 50% of wages paid throughout the training period. Through WE, workers can often be placed in public employment agencies or private business on short term assignments while getting the work experience needed to perform a similar job in the open job market. Big Five also offers traditional classroom training. Working with training institutions several occupational skills training courses are offered. Nursing, welding, computer skills, truck driving, diesel mechanic and much more are possible courses of training available through Big Five's WIA program. Big Five's commitment to workers doesn't stop with training. Supportive Services are available to insure successful completion of training. Upon completion of training, job search assistance and labor market information may also be provided.
Providing young people with jobs or training that will develop good work habits, job maturity and basic job skills is one of Big Five's Youth Program goals. Eligible youth between the ages of 16 and 21 may be enrolled in a variety of program elements that help prepare them for a career.
A better job means a better life!
