Big Five additionally operates a program for the rehabilitation of owner occupied dwellings in the five county area. The rehabilitation process employed by Big Five provides the owner with safe, sanitary housing and helps to stabilize the prevailing market rate for the unit being rehabilitated by reconstituting the integrity and appearance of the structure.
Big Five provides low income home buyers with down payment and closing cost assistance by loaning funds on a five year forgivable second mortgage note.
Other housing related activities Big Five is involved with include a Low-Income Housing Weatherization Assistance Program which we have operated continuously since 1975. Approximately 30 low income families benefit from this program each year, as energy saving measures are applied to their dwellings.
Big Five operates the Emergency Housing Program (EHP) and the Housing Assistance Program (HAP), both authorized by the Stewart P. McKinney Housing Act. In these programs the Agency's objective is to assist very low-income persons to avoid or overcome homelessness. Funds are used to avert evictions and/or utility shut offs, as well as to provide an initial month's rent for homeless persons in certain circumstances.
